Kahului man suffers fatal injuries in moped crash on Maui

A Maui man suffered fatal injuries when his moped was struck by an SUV on South Kamehameha Avenue on Friday, October 29, 2010.   Maui Police identified the man as 26-year-old Travis  Diego of Kahului.

The accident was reported at 6:27 p.m. near the Kuuhoa Street intersection in Kahului.  According to police reports, a 2011 BMW X5 Sport Utility Vehicle was traveling north on South Kamehameha Avenue, and executing a left turn onto Kuuhoa Street, when it collided with an SYM moped traveling south on S. Kamehameha Avenue.

The Kahului man driving the SUV was not injured in the crash.  Diego, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, died of his injuries at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The accident was the 12th traffic fatality on Maui County roads this year.  An investigation continues into the cause of the crash.  The accident forced the closure of S. Kamehameha Avenue between Mahaolu and Maui Lani Parkway for three hours, before it was reopened at 10 p.m.
