Maui police warn public of ‘spoofing’ scam calls

The Maui Police Department is warning the public of recurring phone scams involving spoofed calls that falsely appear to originate from the MPD. Scammers manipulate caller ID information and pose as law enforcement officers, claiming you have an outstanding warrant or missed jury duty. Victims are then pressured to make immediate payments via cryptocurrency, payment apps, gift cards, or credit cards.

Suspect taken into custody in connection with deadly Haleakalā Hwy traffic collision

Maui police say the man wanted in connection with a deadly crash in Pukalani last week, has since been taken into custody. Kaleo Kubo, 31, was taken into custody without incident on Monday, Dec. 15, 2025, according to an update provided by Maui police.

Maui police are looking for a 31-year-old man wanted in connection with a near-fatal motor vehicle collision reported early Wednesday morning in Pukalani. Police say the man, identified as Kaleo Kubo, fled the scene on foot. Kubo, who is known to frequent Central Maui, is wanted in connection with this motor vehicle collision and is also wanted for an active no-bail warrant.

Kula man, convicted felon, sentenced to 40 months for possessing explosive powder

Jess Kiesel Lee, 43, of Kula, Maui, was sentenced last week by US District Judge Jill A. Otake to 40 months of imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release for possessing, as a convicted felon, explosive powder. According to court records, Lee set off an improvised explosive device (“IED”)—a homemade firework—near Kaʻamana Street in Kula, on or before Aug. 7, 2024. Officers with the Maui Police Department later encountered multiple IEDs near that location.
