BREAKING / Verdict reached: Maui doctor found guilty of attempted manslaughter

A verdict has been reached in the trial of a Maui doctor. The jury deliberated about 8 hours before coming to a unanimous decision at around 2:18 p.m., finding the defendant guilty of attempted manslaughter based on severe mental or emotional disturbance. This is a lesser charge than the second degree attempted murder allegations brought against him.

New hire at Maui Police Department arrested on suspicion of sexual assault while off duty

A probationary employee of the Maui Police Department was arrested on suspicion of second, third and fourth degree sexual assault, while off duty, police said.  The 26-year-old Makawao man was taken into custody on Monday, March 30, 2026, following allegations of sexual abuse and remains detained. He has been placed on administrative leave without pay.

Update: Maui police launch murder investigation following fatal stabbing in Kīhei; victim identified

Maui police have since identified the victim in Sunday’s fatal stabbing incident as James Moser, 64, of Kīhei.  The Maui Police Department extended condolences to Moser’s family and friends.

Hawaiʻi County police officer enters plea in evidence tampering case

Kula man, convicted felon, sentenced to 40 months for possessing explosive powder

Jess Kiesel Lee, 43, of Kula, Maui, was sentenced last week by US District Judge Jill A. Otake to 40 months of imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release for possessing, as a convicted felon, explosive powder. According to court records, Lee set off an improvised explosive device (“IED”)—a homemade firework—near Kaʻamana Street in Kula, on or before Aug. 7, 2024. Officers with the Maui Police Department later encountered multiple IEDs near that location.
