George Kahumoku Jr., Hosts Jam Sessions at the MACC

Each month the Maui Arts and Cultural Center offers Maui slack key masters up on a silver platter to any ticket holder and music fan. George Kahumoku Jr., hosts, performs, and talks story each month. Tomorrow night, September 22, at 7:30 p.m., Kahumoku opens the show in the McCoy Studio Theater for slack key veteran Elmer “Sonny” Lim.

Lim has been playing for decades, and has won multiple Na Hoku Hanohano music awards. Lim’s father, was a paniolo at Parker Ranch on the Big Island in Kohala, where the style of slack key originated. Sonny was a part of the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau, in 1975 to 1978, and has performed for audiences locally and internationally in Japan.

Tickets are $25 each or $45 for VIP seating with “talk-story” session. The pre-show dinner is catered by Alexander’s Famous Fish, who will begin serving from 5:30 p.m. Food options include: Tropical salad, grilled ono, mochiko chicken, and assorted desserts. Salad and entrees range from $7 to $10, and desserts will run from $2 to $5 each.
