UPDATE: Kahikinui Brush Fire Burns 30 Acres, 100% Contained

The fire at Kahikinui on Maui was declared under control and 100% contained at 11 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012.

Crews from the Maui Fire Department’s Air-1 helicopter returned at first light this morning to conduct a few water drops.

Ground crews will also continue mopping up hot spots within the burned area today.

The fire was first reported on Saturday afternoon and burned an estimated 30 acres at last report.

A brush fire in the Kahikinui area of Maui burned an estimated 30 acres at last report.

By 6:46 p.m., the fire was 80% contained, with hot spots in the gulch area inaccessible because of rough terrain, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

The fire was burning on the Kaupo side of the Manawainui Gulch and did not require any evacuations.

Firefighters from Engines 13, 5, and 10 responded along with Mini 13, Tankers 10 and 14, Battalion Chief 2, and the department’s Air 1 helicopter.

Crews plan to stand by and monitor the blaze throughout the night.
