A rescue was conducted in East Maui on Sunday, involving a couple who was trapped on an island between two raging rivers.

Search and rescue crews responded to Waimoku Falls in the Oheo Gulch area to assist.

The Maui Fire Department’s Air-1 helicopter located the couple and extracted the individuals, one at a time, to safety.

The call came in at around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, and the rescue was complete just before 6:30 p.m.

The couple was from Hamilton, North Dakota.

That was my daughter.  She sent us pictures of this beautiful place with boardwalks and trails leading to the beautiful waterfall.  She said a storm came up and filled the river instantaneously and that it wasn’t safe to cross back over.  Why do they build walkways so that people can go to places if it wasn’t safe.

Maui is known for flash flooding, tourists often do not do their research about where they are going. It’s beautiful on Maui but you always have to respect the power of its wild-ness. I’m thankful they were rescued and not washed away.

The boardwalk and walkways were built because the ground is marshy, make it easier for people to visit the falls.  There are signs and warnings everywhere with flash flood warnings.  It’s pretty much hike at your own risk.  The flash flood warnings are even for water right off the roadways that you don’t have to hike to.  It’s the environment over there.

Heck, there were flash floods down the main roads through Kihei and our condo parking lot when we were there in December 2007, due to a big storm.

The hike is definitely worth it though, that waterfall is where I got engaged back in Jan 2007.
