An increase in illegal dumping, brush fires and criminal activity will result in the permanent closure of a portion of Kala Road near the Kahului Airport on Maui.

The closure goes into effect on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, and is being enacted under a collaborative agreement between the state Department of Transportation and Maui County.

The Closure extends on Kala Road from Hana Highway to the Eena Street intersection.

Gates will be locked at both ends of the closure, and will be reopened in the event of an emergency or evacuation, with gate keys issued to first responders, county, and civil defense officials.

Department of Transportation officials say access to Kala Road, Lelepio Place, Eena Street, Kuhea Street and Kahului Airport facilities will remain open from Haleakala Highway at the Hana Highway intersection.
