BHS Maui Students to Rally For Traffic Safety

More than 75 individuals will participate in a traffic safety rally on Friday fronting Baldwin High School.

The Hot Spots Traffic Safety event will include participation from BHS students, officers from the Maui Police Department, teachers, Farmers Insurance Hawaii employees, and community members.

Baldwin High School is located on a busy traffic thoroughfare for morning rush-hour drivers going to work in Kahului and Wailuku.

For that reason, participants will gather to remind drivers to slow down and watch out for students on their way to school.

The event is designed to heighten awareness of hazardous driving practices, including speeding, driving distractions such as using a cell phone, and pedestrian safety while crossing the street.

The fine for speeding in a school zone is $297.  Motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk or pedestrians who jaywalk could face fines of $130 each in Maui County.

The traffic safety event is part of the Farmers Hawaii Hot Spots program which was established 10 years ago.  In past years, Farmers Hawaii has held Hot Spots events at Kahului Elementary, Wailuku Elementary and Lihikai Elementary schools on Maui.

The Baldwin HS Hot Spot rally runs from 7 to 8 a.m. on Friday, March 23, 2012.
