Memorial Service Planned for Missing “Charli” Scott and Son

The family of missing Carly “Charli” Scott released a statement today, saying they have planned a public memorial service for Charli and her unborn son, Joshua Aiden Scott, on Sunday, March 23, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Baldwin Beach in Pāʻia.

Charli was five-months pregnant when she went missing on Sunday, Feb. 9. Her case has since been reclassified by Maui police from a missing person to a homicide investigation on Friday, March 7, 2014.

“We hope to see any of the hundreds of people that helped in so many ways. We hope we can have this chance to all be together, and to give thanks. Most importantly, for all of us, it is meant to celebrate Charli and Joshua,” family members said in an online Facebook post.

“Neither Charli, nor her son Joshua Aiden have been recovered, please understand that this is a celebration of the life we knew she had. We still don’t know why it was taken from her or Joshua,” family members said.

The memorial service will be a pot luck gathering with a ceremonial canoe to be launched during the event. The family is asking that guests bring lei’s and flowers to release in the ocean.

Family members are also gathering messages from friends, volunteers and community members. The letters will be used to make two paper mâché unicorns that will be burned in a canoe being made and prepared for launch during the memorial event.

The idea for the letters was offered by the Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center where Charli was employed. Letters can be dropped off at The Hui, located at 2841 Baldwin Avenue in Makawao by Tuesday, March 18th.

Since the pavilion space and tables are limited, those in attendance are encouraged to bring tents and tables, the message said.

Family members thanked the public for their compassion and support and said they would be providing updates as the event nears.
