The state legislature approved $79 million for capital improvement projects in Central Maui, Representative Justin Woodson announced.
The largest appropriations, totaling $38 million, are for Kahului Harbor and include:
- A $21 million appropriation for harbor improvements to provide for safer and more efficient use of operational areas; and
- A $17 million appropriation for land acquisition and improvements including the demolition of existing structures, paving, utilities, landscaping, fencing and other related site improvements.
Woodson who represents the Kahului, Puʻunēnē, Old Sand Hills and Maui Lani, also said nearly $20 million will go toward the renovation of the Kahului Airport restrooms and sewage systems and facilitate already ongoing projects that were funded last year to expand the Kahului Airport and its car rental facilities.
“The updated facilities will enhance everyone’s experiences using the airport and hopefully, encourage return visitors,” Rep. Woodson in a press release announcement.
Additional appropriations include about $6 million to Maui High School for the renovation and expansion of the school’s music and physical fitness buildings.
“By improving the music and sports facilities, we hope to encourage healthier life styles and exposure to culture which ultimately contributes to a well-rounded individual,” said Woodson.
Funding was also provided to improve the heavily used Maui Raceway Park in the amount of $2 million; $4 million for the replacement of the DLNR Maui annex building; and $5 million for improvements to the Central Maui Regional Park.
“The Maui delegation and I worked hard to upgrade and expand various facilities throughout Maui,” said Rep. Woodson. He continued saying, “We are grateful that the Legislature approved the projects that we believe are fiscally responsible and well-deserved.”
Additional projects include the following:
