Road Work Begins in Summit District of Haleakalā
Road work begins today, Monday, Oct. 5, in the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park.
The work zone extends from just below the Haleakalā Visitor Center at the 9,700 foot elevation, up to the summit parking lot at the 10,000 foot elevation.
Park officials say sunrise and sunset viewing and parking will not be impacted by the work.
The daily construction schedule is from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through this Wednesday, Oct. 7, with single lane closures expected.
Park officials released the following work schedule:
- Monday, Oct. 5: At 8 a.m., a single-lane closure for uphill traffic will start one mile below the Haleakalā Visitor Center and extend ¼ mile up the summit access road. The summit access road is just past the Haleakalā Visitor Center parking lot.
- Tuesday, Oct. 6: At 8 a.m., the summit access road will close to visitor traffic. During the summit access road closure, visitors will still be able to view the crater from the Haleakalā Visitor Center. Hikers will still be able to access the Sliding Sands Trail. The summit access road will open to visitor traffic by 6 p.m.
- Wednesday, Oct 7: At 8 a.m., a one-lane closure for downhill traffic will start one mile below the Haleakalā Visitor Center and extend ¼ mile up the summit access road. Delays of up to 10 minutes may occur.
