Central Maui Police Pursuit Ends, Suspect Detained

Maui police have arrested one man and another remains at large in connection with a police pursuit that led to the lockdown of several schools in Central Maui on Friday, Oct. 16, 2015.

Police say Kalama O Lono J. Harry, 31, of Wailuku, was arrested and charged at around 9:10 p.m. on Friday with: first degree attempted murder, first degree criminal property damage, two counts of unauthorized control of a propelled motor vehicle, reckless driving and contempt of court. He was being held at the Wailuku Police Station in lieu of $1,007,400 at last report.

Police say another suspect has not been apprehended; however, investigators are looking into leads of his whereabouts and possible identification.

The incident stems from a reckless driving complaint reported at 11:12 a.m. on Friday on Waiale Road in Wailuku. Police say the caller witnessed a white Toyota Tundra “swerveing all over the road,” before parking at the Kehalani Longs Drugs.

According to police reports, the first responding officer observed the pickup unattended within the parking lot. As a second officer approached the vehicle,

Police say that as Harry approached the vehicle, he allegedly noticed the second officer who had arrived on scene. According to police reports, Harry entered the Tundra, followed by the other male suspect as the passenger.

“The first officer, at the scene, maneuvered his patrol vehicle behind the Toyota Tundra, as Harry’s attention was focused on the second officer,” a police press release stated. Police say Harry then reversed the Tundra without looking which struck the police vehicle behind him.

Police say the first officer was still within his patrol vehicle when it was struck, and sustained non-life threatening injuries as a result of the collision. Police allege that Harry then “intentionally hopped the Longs Drugs parking lot curb and accelerated towards the second officer.”

According to police reports, the second officer jumped out of the way in fear of being struck and Harry fled the scene at what police described as a high rate of speed.

A pursuit was initiated and ended on Puʻumakani Street in Kahului when police say Harry and the other suspect fled on foot abandoning the Tundra.

Maui Waena Elementary School, Lihikai School and Ala Lani Preschool were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

Police say checks for the white Toyota Tundra (921-TRV) revealed it was an unreported stolen vehicle. The vehicle was seized pending the application of a search warrant. A moped, which police say fell from the Toyota Tundra while in pursuit, revealed it was also stolen. The moped was also recovered as evidence.

“In spite of the pursuit, no damages were reported to any property,” police said in a press release statement this afternoon. The incident remains under investigation.
