Luggage Stolen From Vehicle at Kahului Walmart
The Maui Police Department is requesting assistance or information in identifying the vehicle and Offender involved in the theft of luggage from the trunk of a vehicle parked at the Kahului Walmart earlier this month.
The incident was reported on Monday, Jan. 2, 2017 at around 9:43 p.m.
Police say unknown offenders observed a 2017 Black Hyundai Sonata parked within the first handicapped stall of Walmart. The trunk of Black Hyundai was inadvertently opened when the operator exited and went into Walmart to shop. Police say the victims just arrived and came directly from the airport and had all of their luggage in the trunk.
The offender approached the Black Hyundai within a white four door sedan, described by police as possibly a newer model Nissan Altima, from the North side of the parking lot and parked directly behind it, stopping within the opposite lane of travel.
Police say the offender exited the vehicle and grabbed the suitcases from the open trunk, fleeing the parking lot on the main aisle toward the Pakaula Street exit.
Police say one of the victims was seated in the vehicle at the time and partially asleep. That victim did hear a noise coming from behind the vehicle but did not realize that the trunk was open and her property was being stolen.
The offender is believed to be tall and thin, wearing a light colored long sleeve shirt/jacket and white or light colored multi print shorts.
Anyone with information or who can identify the white four door sedan or the offender are asked to contact Detective Leif Adachi at the Criminal Investigations Division at (808) 244-6469 or the Maui Police Department at (808) 244-6400.
