Maui police have launched an attempted murder investigation into an incident in which an officer fired their weapon at a suspect vehicle fleeing from the McDonald’s restaurant at 2138 Main Street in Wailuku.

The investigation stems from an incident reported at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, March 6, 2017, when police responded to a report of a stolen car seen at the location.  Officers arrived and approached a male driver in the vehicle.

Police say the driver sped away “nearly hitting” one officer who then discharged their weapon at the vehicle.

No one was reported injured in the incident.

Police say the vehicle, a brown 2013 Hyundai Elantra, was later located by police, abandoned in Wailuku.  The suspect is still at-large.  Maui Now has learned that the vehicle was reported stolen and was last seen March 5, 2017 at midnight on Kaluanui Rd, Haʻikū.

Vehicle is described as a brown Hyundai four-door sedan Elantra model, front license plates LEK-707.  The public is advised that if they see this vehicle, they should NOT APPROACH THE VEHICLE, but should instead CALL 9-1-1.

The incident was reported shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Monday, March 6, 2017.  McDonald’s employees say the restaurant, located at 2138 Main Street, is currently closed pending the duration of the police investigation.
