Sink Hole Forces Temporary Closure of Highway at Kalepa, Mile 39

Piʻilani Highway near Kalepa Point in East Maui is now open following repairs conducted at a sink hole reported earlier today. Crews from the County Public Works Department responded to fill the hollow space with rocks and aggregate before capping it off with cold mix asphalt. Please proceed with caution in the area.

Maui County Public Works crews have shut down Piʻilani Highway near Kalepa Point in East Maui, near mile markers 38 and 39, due to a sinkhole.
Crews plan to cut the road open so that they can fill the hollow space below with rocks, aggregate and compact, then cap it off with cold mix asphalt. Work is expected to be completed by 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 12, 2017.

The Hāna Highway (31) is closed at Mile 39 in the area of Lelekea Bay due to a sink hole.
Crews from the County of Maui Public Works Department are on scene and are working on repairs.
The roadway was closed at 10:14 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, until further notice in the area.
