Hāli‘imaile Accident Claims Life of Ha‘ikū Man

A Haʻikū man suffered fatal injuries in a single vehicle roll-over crash on Hāliʻimaile Road on Monday night.

The incident was reported at 6:56 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 14, 2017 on Hāliʻimaile Road near Hoʻomalie Place in Haʻikū.

Police say the accident occurred as a brown 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe multi-purpose vehicle was traveling south on Hāliʻimaile Road.  According to police reports, the male operator lost control of the vehicle and the MPV rolled over on the roadway, partially ejecting the driver.

The driver, identified as 70-year-old Maake M. Via, sustained fatal injuries in the crash.

A preliminary investigation reveals that Via was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is on-going.This was Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality of 2017, compared to 11 at the same time last year.
