Huliau Film & Lecture Series Presents Ola ʻo Maui Nui with Hōkūleʻa Crew

On Thursday, Aug. 17, the Huliau Film & Lecture Series will begin a new series called Ola ʻo Maui Nui starting with a presentation by crew members of the Hawaiian sailing canoes, Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia.

Kamehameha Schools Maui invites the public to come and listen to the crews stories of their journey on the open ocean and how they spread the message Mālama Honua at every port they visited.

The free event will be held at Keopuolani Hale beginning at 6 p.m. with light refreshments and the lecture to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Speakers at the lecture will include Penny Martin and Billy Richards from the 1976 Voyage and PWO Navigator Kalepa Baybayan, Pomai Bertelmann and Kala Baybayan from the Mālama Honua Voyage.

The canoes will be welcomed at Honolua Bay on Saturday, Aug. 19. Crew members will come ashore and participate in planting koa trees and native plants at Waokele ‘o Honolua. Canoe tours will also be available from 2 to 5 p.m.
