“In the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, Nov. 28 was an official holiday called Lā Kūʻokoʻa, or Independence Day. This was the day in 1843 when England and France formally recognized Hawaiʻi’s independence,” according to a letter published on the subject.

The ACLU acknowledges that “those rights are based not on race, but on the rights of Native Hawaiians as a unique, Indigenous people who have never relinquished their sovereignty or settled their claims with the United States.” 

In recognition of Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, Hawaiʻi’s Day of Sovereignty Restoration, Fairmont Kea Lani invites the community to a day of cultural learning, reflection and celebration on Sunday, July 27, 2025, from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Attorney General Anne Lopez has received a 10-page letter, with attachments, from Edward Halealoha Ayau who is the attorney representing Maui Police Detective Kamuela Lanakila Mawae. That letter addresses legal concerns regarding the status of Hawaiʻi as an occupied State and potential war crimes being committed by law enforcement officers, according to a news release from Ayau.  

This event commemorates the 132nd anniversary of the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy and honor Hawaiʻi’s last ruling monarch, Queen Liliʻuokalani.

Though little is known today, Joseph Nawahi was a Hawaiian patriot and Renaissance man.  A teacher, surveyor, lawyer, cabinet minister, newspaper editor, and artist, he was born in Puna, Hawaii on January 13, 1842.
