UPDATE: No tsunami risk to Hawaiʻi after 7.4 earthquake east of Japan

There is NO tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi following a powerful earthquake that struck off the east coast of Japan late Sunday, prompting tsunami monitoring across parts of the Pacific.

Fake Tsunami Report Issued on Fabricated Large Quake

Authorities with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center are calling an email report that was distributed at around 4:33 p.m., a false tsunami message.   The email appeared to be from an email address at the warning center, which alerted those on the email chain of a non-existent earthquake in Japan. Authorities are looking into the source.

UPDATE: No Tsunami Threat After 7.8 Japan Earthquake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after a 7.8 (since downgraded from a preliminary 8.5) magnitude earthquake reported in the Bonin Islands region of Japan at 1:23 a.m. HST on Saturday, May 30, 2015.

Maui Firefighters were called to assist in returning a stranded turtle to sea after it had washed ashore in powerful tsunami wave action in Kahului this morning.
