KAHULUI STABBING VICTIM IDENTIFIED

Maui police have identified the man killed in a stabbing in Central Maui on Monday as 33-year-old John Shaniyo of Kahului.  An autopsy performed on the man today revealed that he died as a result of a single stab wound to his abdomen which severed a main artery.  A 23-year-old woman, Rachael Berta was charged with 2nd Degree Murder in the case and was being held in lieu of a half a million dollars bail.

Some new developments in a Kahului stabbing:  Maui Police say the 33-year-old male victim died late last night after being transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.  Authorities say the man was stabbed by a female acquaintance Tuesday afternoon at the 107 West Kauai Street Residence, and died at 9:55 p.m.  What was an attempted murder investigation, has now been classified as a Murder II case.  A 23-year-old suspect remains in custody this morning.  Maui police say charges are still pending for Rachel Berta of Kahului as the investigation continues.  Berta was arrested after being located at the Kahului Union Church yesterday.  The identity of the victim is pending notification of next of kin.  An autopsy is planned for today.

Maui Police have launched an attempted murder investigation following the stabbing of a man in Kahului this afternoon.  The incident was reported at around 2 p.m. at a residence located at 107, West Kauai Street.   There, police say a 33-year-old man suffered critical injuries after being stabbed by a female acquaintance.  Authorities say the responsible female was later located at the Kahului Union Church and transported to the Wailuku Police station.  23-year-old Rachel Berta of Kahului was identified by police as the suspect and arrested on suspicion of 2nd degree attempted murder.  Charges had not been filed as of late last night.  The investigation is ongoing.
