(Posted by Wendy OSHER © 2009)
The National Weather Service has issued a WIND ADVISORY for the COUNTY OF MAUI in effect from 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2009 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2009.
A Wind Advisory means that sustained wind speeds of 30 MPH with higher gusts are expected.
High pressure building north of the Islands will produce very strong trade winds. The winds will be especially strong and gusty in downslope areas, and along the southwestern, leeward sides of most islands. Also expect strong winds where local acceleration occurs through valleys, around headlands and over mountain ridges.
As a precaution, motorists area advised that winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. The public is also asked to secure any loose objects that may become airborne, or move the items indoors.
Maui County Civil Defense will continue to monitor the situation. The NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts can be reached by calling 1-866-944-5052, and the NOAA Weather Internet services can be found at www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl.
Pre-recorded advisories and notifications are available 24-hours a day on the Maui County Automated Information System (AIS) by calling 986-1200.
