KA’APUNI UPDATE: DAY 5, 110 HOURS: WEDNESDAY 2/25/09 2 P.M.

The torch lit procession around Maui for unity and enlightenment in the Native Hawaiian community is now half way into day 5 in a 193 mile journey around the island.The group departed from Maluaka Beach near the Maui Prince Resort this morning at around 9 a.m.The procession traversed the moku district boundary between the Honua’ula and Kula mokus (districts) near the Keawekapu Beach at around 12:45 p.m., where a ceremonial exchange was made between Kaleikoa Kaeo and Ke’eaumoku Kapu.The torch crew was last reported near Kamaole Beach Park III at 1:15 p.m. where they were taking a breather after being on the road for about five hours in the latest leg of the journey.In order to keep the torch lit, the procession may have to stop on occasion, as winds have been strong in the South Maui area.The group is expected to continue northward throughout the afternoon, with plans to stop at the Kihei Youth Center at some point later today where they will be hosted to a rest stop.The procession is well into the 193-mile journey that is expected to conclude at Moku’ula on Friday afternoon around 4 p.m. Motorists are advised to use extra caution when passing the procession for the safety of those on the road and on foot.
