MAUI POET W.S. MERWIN EARNS PULITZER
Poet and Maui resident, W.S. Merwin earned a second Pulitzer, this time for his recent publication entitled “The Shadow of Sirius.” The work is described as a collection of luminous, often tender poems that focus on the profound power of memory. Merwin was awarded $10,000 for the accomplishment. The poet was born in New York City and is the son of a Presbyterian minister. A separate publication released in 1998 entitled “The Folding Cliffs,” became popular in the islands in part because of its setting on Kauai and fictional account of a 19th Century Hawaiian story.
