TARO FESTIVAL

The 17th Annual East Maui Taro Festival will be held tomorrow at the Hana Ballpark.  The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features kalo or taro, a staple, traditional, and sacred symbol of the Hawaiian people and culture.  There will be 20 food booths, more than 30 arts and craft booths, cultural demonstrations, and performances throughout the day.  Admission is free.  The following day (on Sunday)-the Hana Business Council will serve up a Taro pancake Breakfast at the Ballpark.  With Excursions planned to the Kapahu Living Farm Taro Lo’i to follow breakfast.

DAVID MALO DAY

The Lahainaluna Boarders organization is sponsoring a get-together of boarders who will be returning to Lahaina for the David Malo Luau.  The boarders’ gathering is planned for 5 p.m. tonight at the Veteran’s Clubhouse on Flemming Road.  Tomorrow, a blessing ceremony will be held as the school unveils a refurbished time clock.  The structure was first used in 1941 by the Lahainaluna boarders to record the hours they worked fro their room and board, and was used continuously until it became inoperative around 1976 when the only repairman familiar with the clock passed away.  The refurbished structure was rebuilt by the Maui Carpenters Union and the Maui International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers with the financial support from the Lahainaluna classes of 1948 and 1950.
