The Maui Police Department is investigating speed drugs and alcohol as possible contributing factors to a critical moped crash in South Maui last night. The accident was reported at 8:46 p.m. when a moped collided with a pickup truck on South Kihei Road. Both vehicles were traveling south, with the truck turning right into a driveway. Acting Lt. Barry Aoki said the 23-year-old Kihei man operating the moped was transported to Maui memorial Medical Center in critical condition. He was not wearing protective equipment. The driver of the pickup truck and a passenger were not injured. The accident remains under investigation.
