A structure fire in South Maui was brought under control shortly before 7 o’clock this morning (Wednesday, October 14, 2009).

The incident was reported at 5:45 a.m. at a single story condominium building under construction at 64 Ehiku Street.  The 4,500 square foot building was unoccupied and was intended for use as a community hall for the new Ehiku Subdivision off of Welakahao Road.  Battalion Chief Sheldon Holokai said, three fire crews responded to the scene including units from Kihei, Wailea and Kahului, along with an air light truck that also provided assistance.  Fire inspectors remained on scene this morning. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The incident is the third structure fire reported in less than two weeks.  A separate fire less than three miles away caused an estimated $6 million to a home under construction near Keawekapu in South Maui on October 3, 2009.  All fires remain under investigation.
