Two Waiehu children were transported via Medic Air to Kapiolani Medical Center after sustaining critical injuries in a fireworks accident.
The incident was reported just after midnight on January 1, 2010 in a Lower Waiehu subdivision where the injured 11-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl reside.
Maui Police say the two were injured when they were playing with fireworks in the bed of the family’s pick-up truck. A police investigation revealed that a loud boom was heard, and all of the fireworks in the truck bed were ignited.
Both sustained serious burns when their clothing caught fire.
Medics initially transported the injured children to Maui Memorial Medical Center, but both were subsequently transported in critical condition to Oahu for further treatment.
