Water Conservation Urged In Central And South Maui During Upgrades

Water customers in Central and South Maui are being asked to conserve water on Thursday and Friday this week, January 7 and 8, 2010, as crews complete work to install new electrical terminations at three Waihee wells.

The three wells traditionally provide a total average of five million gallons of water per day to the Central and South Maui areas.  All three wells will be out of service during the work period.

The affected area includes Paia/Kuau, Spreckelsville, Puunene, Kahului, Wailuku, Waihee, Waikapu, Maalaea, Kihei, Wailea, and Makena.

Customers are asked to turn off irrigation systems and use water only as needed for health and safety purposes in order to extend the supply available in the storage tanks until the wells are back online.

The wells will be shut down so the pumps can be sequentially disconnected from the old starters and reconnected to new state of the art starters.  Officials with the Department of Water Supply say the electrical upgrade project will improve the reliability of the water system.
