By Wendy Osher
An Oregon man died this afternoon after being brought to shore at Oneloa Beach (also known as Little Beach) in Makena.
The victim, who had been swimming at the South Maui location, was identified as a 49-year-old man from Portland, Oregon. Maui police, who responded to the scene at 12:17 p.m., say the man and his swimming companion encountered trouble when they became caught in an apparent riptide.
Both were brought to shore by lifeguards, who performed CPR on the victim, but were unable to revive him as he expired at the scene.
The second male was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment and was last listed in good condition.
Official identification of the deceased is pending notification of next of kin and an autopsy.
