Maui March for Martin Luther King Jr Day
Maui’s African American Foundation celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a Peace and Justice March in Kahului. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2010.
The African American Heritage Foundation of Maui begins their annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Peace and Justice March and Festivities with a march begining at 11 a.m. The march starts at Maui Community College and continues to Hoaloha Park where further festivities are planned.
The Reverend Robert Graetz, who led his Trinity Lutheran Church congregation along with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other icons of the Civil Rights movement in the 1955-56 Montgomery, Alabama Bus Boycott, is the guest speaker at the Maui event. The event runs until 2 p.m. Those in attendance will be served a free meal and are asked to bring a mat to sit on.
County of Maui offices will close Monday, January 18, 2009 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Hana, Molokai and Lanai Landfills will be closed; Central Maui Landfill will be open from 7 a.m. to noon, and the Olowalu Recycling & Refuse Convenience Center will be open from 9 a.m. to noon. The Waiehu Golf Course and all County pools are scheduled to be open for normal hours of operation.
