The Maui Planning Committee will hold a public meeting in South Maui tonight to discuss details of the Kihei-Makena Community Plan and its role in the larger Maui Island Plan.

The presentation will focus on potential impacts for the community plan area and is part of a series of meetings taking place around Maui County.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Kihei Community Center. The series of community meetings will conclude at Helene Hall in Hana on Thursday. The Planning committee will then return to the Council Chamber for decision making meetings set to start in February.

The draft Maui Island Plan is available for review online at: http://tinyurl.com/maui-island-plan/. Pursuant to Chapter 2.80B of the Maui County Code, the Maui Island Plan will establish growth boundaries for the first time. The deadline to enact the Maui Island Plan is Oct. 18, 2010.

“The Maui Island Plan is one of the most important documents the Council will consider this term,” said Councilmember Sol Kaho`ohalahala. “I urge Maui residents to study the draft Maui Island Plan, testify before the Planning Committee and tell Council members where and how the island should grow in the coming decades.”

The meetings are open to the public. Meeting agendas are available on the Planning Committee website.
