Kahului students return to class after $500,000 fire

It’s back to class this morning for students at Kahului School.  DOE area superintendent Bruce Anderson tells Pacific Radio Group and MauiNOW.com that school will resume as usual today following a fire Sunday that destroyed three classrooms.

The fire was reported just a few minutes before 1 a.m., crews were on scene at 1:02 a.m., the fire was under control at 1:32 a.m. and extinguished at 4:17 a.m.

Fire officials say the blaze caused an estimated $450,000 to the structure and $50,000 to its contents.  The total estimated burn area was 2,880 square feet.

Among the crews responding to the scene were Engine 10, Rescue 10, Hazmat, Engine 1 and two Battalion Chiefs.  Fire inspectors concluded their work on site by mid-day Sunday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
