Ki ho‘alu (loosen the key) is one of the world’s great guitar traditions.  The music is sweet and soulful, and it is said that slack key music is drawn from the heart and soul, filtering out through the fingers of each player.  On Sunday, June 27, 2010, the 19th Annual Ki Ho‘alu Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival, Maui Style, returns to Maui Arts & Cultural Center with performances from 2 to 7 pm.  Admission is free.

The MACC is pleased to present the 19th Annual Ki Ho ‘alu Slack Key Guitar Festival on June 27 with a great lineup of 15 musicians, a guitar exhibit, island crafters and lots of great food. Photo courtesy the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

Festival-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or roll out a blanket on the Events Lawn and enjoy an all-star line-up of Hawaii’s best slack key guitar musicians.  Popular musicians and recording artists performing on stage this year include:  Makana, Brother Noland, George Kahumoku, Stephen Inglis, Kevin and Ikaika Brown, Dennis Kamakahi, Jeff Peterson, Bobby Moderow, Paul Togioka, LT Smooth, Donald Kaulia, Dwight Kanae, Patrick Landeza, Walter Keale and Chris Lau.

This MACC signature festival also features crafters from Hawai‘i, lots of ‘ono food by Maui restaurants and caterers, and an awesome guitar exhibit all in a laid-back ambiance that lingers until dusk.  Food providers include:  Alexander’s Famous Fish, Maui Macaroons, Nacho Mama’s, Sharing Aloha, Whole Foods and Zia Maria’s Gelato.

Ki Ho‘alu Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival is presented by Maui Arts & Cultural Center and sponsored by The Maui News.  Additional support for the festival is provided by Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, County of Maui Office of Economic Development, Ka Hoku Productions, Ki Ho‘alu Foundation, Rhythm & Roots Records, Taylor Guitars and Pacific Radio Group/KPOA.  For more information, call the MACC Box Office at (808) 242-SHOW (7469), visit MauiArts.org or SlackKeyFestival.com
