The state Department of Transportation, Airports Division, Kauai District, will conduct a mass casualty emergency response exercise at the Lihue Airport today (July 1, 2010).

The realistic exercise simulates an airliner crash and tests emergency response by first responders including Lihue Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting teams; the Kauai Fire Department, Kauai County Police Department, Emergency Medical Services, Transportation Security Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, US Coast Guard, state Department of Health, Wilcox Hospital, Disaster Medical Assistance Team, local airlines and other state agencies.

All flight schedules and airport operations will continue as normal during the exercise. Air travelers and motorists are asked to be aware of additional emergency vehicles and security personnel staging around the airport for the exercise. The exercise is expected to conclude at 1 p.m.
