Longs Drugs Kahului to host Maui Drug Take Back
Maui hosts its first Drug Take Back service this Saturday, October 16th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Maui Mall Longs Drugs Store in Kahului. The program was launched by the state in September as part of a nation-wide effort to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning, prevent entry of the drugs into the human water supply, and avoid potential harm to aquatic life.
So far, the program in Hawaii has taken back more than 345 pounds of expired and unwanted prescription medications. The service is free and anonymous. The drugs will be incinerated according to federal and state environmental guidelines.
Those dropping off drugs should be aware that only tablets, capsules, and solid dosage forms will be accepted. Intravenous solutions, injectibles, and syringes will not be accepted.
The program was launched by the Department of the Attorney General, the
Department of Public Safety, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, in coordination with community partners.
