Mark Johnstone of Wavetrain

“If it isn’t funky, get it outta the way!”

You’ve got to be a darned funky band to secure a weekly gig at the ever-popular Charley’s restaurant in Paia.

Earning this coveted position every Thursday night is Wavetrain, a band led by Grammy-nominated keyboardist Mark Johnstone. You may have caught Mark in the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band. If not, be sure to catch him this Thursday night at Charley’s.

There is no such thing as sitting still while Wavetrain is pumping their unique blend of dirty Jazz-Latin-Electro-Funk over the speaker system. The energy is high, the drinks are a-guzzlin’, and the vibe is as groovy as it gets. Dare you not to dance!

The band is composed of Maui musical pillars, Justin Favell on Guitar, Marcus Johnson on Bass, and Paul Marchetti on Drums.

If you got some of the best musicians on Maui together in one room, that would be Wavetrain. Often hosting guests to spice up the set, you might just find a full blown horn section.

As a matter of fact, yours truly (that’s me!) will be sitting in on violin this Thursday, revving things up a notch with a bit of fiddling and ambient orchestration.

Be sure to come early and partake in Charley’s famous cuisine. Featuring organic vegetables, seafood, pizza, beer, and other such Americana fare, their nightly specials are always out of this world.

Billed as “Willie Nelson’s favorite spot on the island,” you know you’re in good company. Plus, you never know who might show up. The venue boasts pool tables in addition to food, beer, and live entertainment. It’s a “can’t miss” evening out.

The show starts promptly at 10 PM, with a $5 cover charge at the door.

Just steps from the beach, you can find the legendary restaurant and saloon at 142 Hana Hwy in Paia.

Although the parking lot behind Charley’s is currently under construction (much to the chagrin of locals), you can find parking up Baldwin Avenue next to Mana Foods.
