12/1/10 3:30p High Surf Advisory East Shores of Maui and Molokai

A high surf advisory has been issued for the East facing shores of Maui and Molokai until 6 a.m. on Saturday.  The National Weather Service issued the notification this afternoon, saying high pressure building north of the state will bring increasing swells from the northeast over the next couple of days.

Beaches affected by the increase surf could experience rip currents and localized beach erosion.

The northeast swell will combine with even shorter period wind waves from the east northeast, resulting in rough surf.  Surf is expected to be in the 6-10 foot range along the affected east facing shores.

Surf is expected to build through Thursday and remain elevated through Friday.

A high tide of approximately 2.6 feet is expected between 12:43 a.m. and 2:01 a.m. Thursday morning. The next high tide of approximately 1.7 feet is expected between 11:11 a.m. and 1:12 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Beachgoers are urged to stay well away from the shore break due to hazardous wave action and strong rip currents.
