A 15-year-old Kihei boy was injured in an apparent shark attack at the “Ledges” surf spot on Maui Sunday afternoon.

The boy sustained lacerations to his lower left foot, ankle, and leg while body boarding at the popular location. Maui police say the boy was listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The incident was reported at 3:34 p.m. on Sunday, December 26, 2010 near the mouth of Kahului Harbor.

The boy was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment. The attending emergency room physician indicated the injuries were consistent with a shark bite, according to Maui Police Lt. Wayne Ibarra.

A stretch of beach within a one mile radius was closed while DLNR and County Water Safety Officers conducted an investigation.
