What’s sweet, filling, loaded with potassium, fiber, vitamins C and B6, and made right here on Maui? The delicious treat of banana bread. And though this treat involves just a few simple ingredients, once those ingredients have been combined in perfect proportion to each other, the results pack quite a punch. Both Maui establishments, Julia’s Banana Bread and the Farmer’s Market and Deli Store in Honokowai, offer wholesome, fresh banana bread for those either willing to make the trek up the north side of the island or for those who’d rather make a quick run for their fix.
Since 1991, Julia’s Banana Bread has functioned inside a bright green treehouse in the quant village of Kahakuloa located on the north side of the island. The village is home to roughly 100 people, two charming churches, and numerous roadside stands, one belonging to Julia. Try free samples of the sweet treat before committing to buying a loaf but don’t procrastinate—the banana bread sells out seven days a week. In addition to banana bread, Julia’s also offers coconut candy nuggets, dried mango, breadfruit (seasonally), roasted macadamia nuts, taro chips, pineapple and passion fruit jelly, a variety of island fruit drinks, and homemade crafts and gifts.
Julia’s Banana Bread is open daily from 9am-5:30pm or until they sell out.
For a quick banana bread fix, Famer’s Market and Deli Store in Honokowai specializes in fresh produce, island fruits, baked goods, salsas, dips, and fresh flowers. Using the simple ingredients of butter, flour, sugar, baking soda, soybean oil and spices, Farmer’s Market and Deli Store proves that fresh is best. Pick up a smoothie while you’re there, also made with local, quality ingredients.
Farmer’s Market and Deli Store is open daily from 7am-7pm.
