Maui and Molokai are under a High Surf WARNING until 6 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2011 for surf along the north facing shores of both islands.

Surf is expected to build to 20 to 25 feet, bringing dangerous, battering waves to the north shoreline.  Beach goers are urged to stay out of the water and well away from the shore break due to hazardous wave action and deadly rip currents.

The large northwest swell was generated by a storm  passing far north of the state.  The system is expected to bring a mix of long and short period swells and rough surf along the north facing shores.

The National Weather Service has also released tide projections: A high tide of approximately 1.3 feet is expected between 12:45 p.m. and 2:03 p.m. this afternoon. The next high tide of approximately 2.7 feet is expected between 2:17 a.m. and 3:35 a.m. tomorrow morning.
