The National Weather Service issued a Flood Advisory for the island of Maui until 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2011. At 11:38 p.m., radar showed heavy rain near Kipahulu, or about 30 miles southeast of Kahului. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary. Other locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hana and Hamoa. As a precautionary measure, the public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff can also make driving conditions hazardous due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Motorists and pedestrians should not cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicles or on foot. The advisory may need to be extended beyond 1:15 a.m. if heavy rain persits.
