The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Watch for the summit of Haleakala on Maui and the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island. The Watch remains in effect through Friday afternoon.
The winds are being generated by a developing low pressure system west of the state. The strongest winds are expected over the higher terrain of Maui and the Big Island.
Winds are expected to increase to 30-45 mph with gusts to 60 mph overnight.
A High Wind Watch is issued when sustained winds of at least 40 mph, or gusts of 58 mph or stronger are expected.
