By Erica Garza
Satiate your sweet tooth by trekking across the island to sample the best desserts in Maui. From the Hula Pie masterpiece at one of the TS Restaurants to the Kaiserschmarren at Spago in Wailea, there are plenty of decadent treats island-wide that will have you flying through appetizers and entrees for the exquisite grand finale.
Hula Pie—All TS Restaurants, Lahaina
A TS classic, the Original Hula Pie is a massive dessert offered at Kimo’s, Hula Grill, Leilani’s and Duke’s. Billed as “the dessert that the sailors swam ashore for in Lahaina,” Hula Pie is comprised of macadamia nut ice cream piled high on a chocolate cookie crust and topped with chocolate fudge, whipped cream, and more macadamia nuts. It’s big enough to share.
Roy’s Melting Hot Chocolate Soufflé—Roy’s, Kahana
Roy’s famous Chocolate Soufflé arrives hot to your table, fresh from the oven. Made from flourless chocolate cake, this rich, heavenly dessert has a hot, molten center and is served with tart raspberry coulis and vanilla ice cream. A classic!
Caramel Miranda—Mala Ocean Tavern, Lahaina
The restaurant’s signature dessert is a melted dark chocolate and caramel sauce-covered plate with layered and broiled island fruit, raspberries, Maui Gold pineapple, baby coconuts and vanilla macadamia nut brittle ice cream.
Hali’imaile Pineapple Upside-Down Cake—Hali’imaile General Store, Hali’imaile
This dessert is the obvious result of being located in the middle of a pineapple field. Sink your teeth into a caramelized Maui Gold pineapple baked with a buttery vanilla pound cake. Dessert served warm with whipped cream.
Mama’s Chocolate Kuau Pie—Mama’s Fish House, Paia
Baked in a caramel cookie crust, this opulent treat is a chocolate lover’s dream come true, with a sweet caramel layer sandwiched between rich ganache mouse and crunchy cookie crust.
Kaiserschmarren—Spago, Wailea
Expect nothing less than extraordinary from Spago at The Four Seasons. A crème fraîche soufflé pancake is served with sautéed apple bananas for a divine result that is light, fluffy and refined.
