An estimated 8,400 gallons of wastewater overflowed in Wailuku yesterday. Officials from the Maui Department of Environmental Management say the overflow was caused by blockage from 6″ rocks in a mainline.

The incident was reported at 3:45 on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, and was stopped by 4:30 p.m.

The overflow occurred in the area fronting the Maui Community Correctional Center on Waiale Drive.  Wastewater flowed from a manhole into a storm drain culvert which leads to a fenced retention basin, that does not connect to the ocean.

The line was cleared, water in the storm drain was removed, the spill site was disinfected, and the Department of Health was notified of the incident.
