The newest spot for pizza, sports watching, and beer in Lahaina is Jay’s Place, taking residence at the Wharf where Mulligan’s used to stand.

The Italian eatery, owned by Luz and Jose Pascual, features a menu of pasta, pizza and subs along with specialties like the 8 oz. grilled rib eye steak, linguine vongole, and tequila-lime mahimahi. There’s also a wide array of bar favorites to enjoy while watching sports on four flat-screen TVs such as buffalo wings, fried calamari and more.

Maui Now tried the bruschetta, house salad and margherita pizza made with cheesy mozzarella, fresh basil and tomatoes. The bruschetta was incredibly refreshing, just the right amount of garlic in a generous dollop of tomato salad served on crisp grilled bread. The salad was pretty disappointing but it may have been for the fact that the greens were drowned in Italian dressing—be sure to order it on the side.

The pizza, on the other hand, was massive and satisfying, making Jay’s a solid rival for other competitors near Front Street, including Penne Pasta on Dickenson and Lahaina Pizza Company. The pizza was prepared in deep-dish style with a crispy crust and extra cheese; Jay’s certainly isn’t skimpy with their mozzarella. The large was too big for two, but the pizza makes great leftovers, too. And the margherita was packed with flavor, leaving no need to add extra Parmesan or sprinkled chili flakes.

For a Friday night, Jay’s was pretty quiet, even though they offer ample seating inside, a fully stocked bar and outdoor seating in the open-air Wharf.  The bartender, Patrick, who also served as our waiter, was incredibly attentive and full of stories. Even if the place were packed, it’s doubtful we would have been neglected.
