State flags fly at half-staff today in honor of former State Lawmaker and Kaua’i County Councilman William “Billy” Fernandes.

Fernandes died June 2, 2011 at his home in Wailua Homesteads on Kaua’i.  His advocacy in the community included help in establishing the Kaua’i Racing Association.  He also served on the Kaua’i Farm Bureau and on the Veterans Council.

Governor Neil Abercrombie, who issued the order this morning, called Fernandes, “a true son of Hawai’i.” The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on June 13, 2011.
