Waihe’e Elementary on Maui gets New Day Funding

Waihe’e Elementary School on Maui is among a list of nine public schools that received funds today as part of the Governor’s New Day Work Projects.  The funds will go towards improved safety and creating a better learning environment for students.  The New Day Work Projects, initiated by Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s Administration, were designed to create jobs, and stimulate the economy.

The list of schools included in today’s capital improvement funding announcement are:

• Stevenson Middle School: $7.75 million for construction of a multipurpose educational facility to support science curriculum.
• Mililani Middle School: $2.5 million for construction of covered play courts.
• Fern Elementary School: $575,000 for improvements to the water damaged cafeteria building roof.
• Waihe’e Elementary School: $600,000 for renovation of buildings and structural improvements.
• Mililani Uka Elementary School: $36,000 for improvements of reconfiguration to the cafeteria stage.
• Noelani Elementary School: $500,000 for a technology/media center and expansion improvements to the school library.
• Moanalua Elementary School: $132,000 for improvements to the dual-purpose basketball/volleyball.
• Kaelepulu Elementary School: $175,000 for construction of an accessible route from parking lot to Building C.
• Mililani High School: $312,000 for resurfacing of the parking lot and driveways.

The New Day Work program includes irrigation system and energy efficiency projects, educational facilities, and transportation infrastructure.  Since December 2010, Governor Abercrombie has approved the release of over $300 million for these projects.  Just last week, more than a million dollars was released for safety improvements and security at six O’ahu Schools.
