School Is Out, But Food Is In For 1500 Maui Kids

More than 1500 kids on Maui will benefit from a Summer Food Service Program that ensures the needs of low-income children are met when school is out. An estimated 10,000 children in Maui County receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year, but many of the same kids do not get enough to eat over the summer school break.

“That’s where we come in, by providing nutritious meals and activities to keep children nourished and engaged,” said Karen N. Deguilmo with the PALS program. “Our responsibility to children doesn’t end when school lets out. Children who get enough to eat and have safe activities to participate in during the summer are less likely to get into mischief and trouble,” said Deguilmo.

The Summer Food Service Program is federally funded, operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and administered by the state. The program is offered at 11 sites on Maui and Molokai through the County of Maui, Department of Parks and Recreation-PALS Program.

The Summer Food Service Program combines meal time with recreational and educational activities. Meals are on a first come first serve basis. Interested families should call the PALS office in advance to participate at 270-7403.

Last year, 948 children were served through the program. This year, the program is being offered to more than 1,525 kids.
