Two downed light poles forced the partial closure of Wells Park in Wailuku this morning.  Workers heard the light poles come crashing down near the upper tennis courts at around 11 a.m.

Parks Director Glenn Correa said the wind and the rusted condition of the poles likely caused them to fall.

Crews from the County Department of Parks and Recreation closed the upper tennis courts and  basketball courts as a precaution.  Two light poles at the basketball area were inspected and found to be in the same rusted condition as those that came down earlier.

The light poles at the lower tennis courts are new, and therefore that area of the park will remain open.

There is no estimate on when the County will reopen the closed areas of the park to the public.
