Borders Bookstore announced the closure of its remaining 399 stores, including the Express store at the Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului.

The Book chain closed the larger Dairy road location in May and announced the planned closure yesterday of all Borders, Borders Express, and Waldenbooks stores across the nation. The company’s liquidation will affect an estimated 10,700 people nationwide.

The remaining stores begin liquidation sales today with prices slashed by up to 40%.

Borders had nearly 1.8 million people registered with its Borders Rewards program.  Company officials say Borders Bucks will still be good for redemption through the end of this month, with other Borders Rewards Plus discounts available through August 5, 2011.

The closure leaves Barnes & Noble in the Lahaina Gateway center as the last large book selling chain on Maui.
