The Department of Water Supply is urging customers to conserve water in South Maui due to a power outage reported in Waihee on Sunday morning.

The water conservation is requested for customers in Kihei, Wailea, and Makena.

The power outage was reported at 9 a.m. in Waihee and resulted in an outage of water service at the Waihee, Waiehu, and Kanoa 1 Wells, as well as Shaft 33. The water sources affected serve as a primary source of water for the South Maui area.

MECO officials say the power outage was caused by a problem with an insulator in Piihana, which took out power in Wailuku Heights, Waiehu, Waihee and Kahakuloa.

Water customers in the South Maui area are asked to conserve water for the rest of Sunday and on Monday morning.

Power should be restored by the end of the day on Sunday, July 24, 2011.
